National Air and Space Museum

2025 Craftsmanship Awards Winner –
THERMAL AND MOISTURE PROTECTION

General: The air and space museum in DC is the largest of the 21 smithsonian musems. The building spans over 3 city blocks and comprises approx 620,000 SF (approx. 11 football fields). The building includes priceless artifacts (over 2000 individual pieces) including some of the most iconic historical items in our nations history such as the Hubble space telescope, The spirit of saint louis airplance and the Apollo 11 command module.

Scope of work:  Project involved total replacement of the existing low slope roof systems with a new single ply PVC roof system (Sarnafil), multiple Hot Rubber roof systems on terraces and balconies, pavered terraces, cooling tower roof. Project also involved over 120,000 SF of new plaza waterproofing at ground floor plaza and planter areas that protects a below grade garage that houses all the necessary mechanical equipment for the building. The work performed by the James Myers Company will help protect these invaluable artifacts from exterior moisture for many years to come!
